Day 3 - Visiting an Orphanage
On Saturday we spent the morning by the pool again, enjoying the sunshine. Then after lunch we went to an orphanage just outside of Kampala. It was run by a Dutch man and his Ugandan wife who started it 16 years ago. They are supported by churches in Holland and are preparing to leave this orphanage in order to start a new one somewhere else in Uganda.
The orphanage serves lots of children and is really a boarding school for most of them. Only the neediest children are taken otherwise the demand would be too high. They even have computers and Internet access (costing 250$ a month).
We spent a lot of time getting to know the children and playing games with them. We taught them some songs and they taught us some of theirs too. Although the facilities look quite basic, the children are very happy and seem to grow up well.
I left early to go with Gary and Tim to Namirembe in order to try and update the web site, since it had been so difficult and time consuming at Kabira. We got a special hire taxi and having negotiated the fare we set off. It was a long way across Kampala and the driver had to fill up with petrol at one fuel station and pump the tires up at another. By the time we got to Namirembe one of the front wheels sounded as though it was about to fall off.
Would you believe it? As soon as I had sat down at a computer in the cathedral complex, the power went off so I was unable to do anything. Tim and Gary met the Dinka bishop from Sudan who was going to come and talk to the tour party in the evening. He gave us a fascinating talk about the situation in Sudan and northern Uganda, as well as talking about the revival going on in his part of Sudan.
In the evening, we all had dinner together as a birthday celebration for Sue Watson and Andrew Brown who both had birthdays while we were in Uganda. We then had an early night to prepare for the long journey into the west on the following day.
