Day 2 - Sight seeing

On the first Friday of our tour we spent the morning relaxing by the pool and then went out for lunch. We went to a restaurant recommended by Shakib for a specially arranged Ugandan banquet.

The restaurant was in a Kampala back street but the food was fantastic. There was lots of it and plenty of variety. It was our first chance to try such staples as Makote and ground nut sauce. My favourite was Talapia, a wonderfully good tasting fish from Lake Victoria. We also had casava, sweet potatoe, yam, spinach and lots more.

While we were eating - some inside, some outside - local children were gathering to watch the unusual occurrence. Once we had eaten enough, most of our number could not resist getting to know these children. It was also our first chance to get to know Garry Ions, a CMS missionary in Kampala, who would provide much needed advice and support.

After lunch Shakib took us on a tour of some of the city sights. Our first stop was a shrine to the old king and his 84 widows. We also met an icecream salesman but resisted the temptation to buy any.

Our second stop was the old palace, located on top of a hill with a great view over the city. Eventually it was time to get back to the Kabira Club for our evening reception. There it was good to see lots of friends of Dean Close School.
